HBS Waitlist slight news–

MBA Program

January 31, 2012

Hello Everyone,

Even though the first of the month isn’t until tomorrow, I thought an “early edition” of the monthly waitlist update might be helpful.

Today we are sending out the first wave of interview invitations to Round 2 candidates. Here’s how this affects the waitlist:

For candidates who have NOT been interviewed yet:

  • Some of you may be invited to interview today
  • Some of you may be invited to interview in one of the next two waves: February 7 or 14
  • Some of you may be “released” on February 14
  • Some of you (a small handful) may be asked to stay on the waitlist beyond February 14

For candidates who have ALREADY BEEN INTERVIEWED:

You should not expect any activity on your application this month. We will revisit your application again in March as we make decisions on the Round 2 candidates. Many of you should expect a final decision on your application on March 29, the decision notification date for Round 2. I will send another update in mid-March as to how we’ll be communicating decisions.

Since we do not plan to make decisions any earlier than what I have outlined above, we understand that some of you may require a different timeline; if so, and you would like to remove yourself from our waitlist, please email me at dana_scalisi@hbs.edu.

I hope this is helpful! Thank you for your patience, and please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Dana Scalisi

CRUEL??? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN

MBA Program
May 23, 2011

Hello Everyone:

Tomorrow, a number of you will be receiving an email indicating that you are being
released from our waitlist. We have spent the last week carefully reviewing all of the waitlist
candidates, and will be retaining about 30 candidates whom we will continue
 to keep in active consideration.

We expect that approximately 10-15 offers of admission will be made to those remaining on the
waitlist. This will happen on a rolling basis; we will begin admitting candidates from
the waitlist at the end of this week.

For those of you who are being released, you will be receiving an email
letter tomorrow that will serve as the official notification of this release.
Please note that this is a system generated letter – we wanted to reach
all of you via this email first.

I want to sincerely thank you for your participation on the
waitlist this year. We have come to know all of you very closely through
your applications and contact via email, in person, and by phone.
We know that waiting is not easy, and your participation and patienc
e during this time has been tremendously appreciated by us.

For those of you not being released – please assume that if you
do not receive an email from us tomorrow, you remain on the waitlist.

Sincerely,

Eileen Chang

Yet another WaitList Update fr. HBS -15 offers pzzble in May

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

MBA Program

May 10, 2011

Hello Everyone:

We are actively reviewing our waitlist candidates now and will begin releasing decisions starting next week. Contrary to the calls we received yesterday, we did not admit 20 people from the waitlist last Friday. We have not made any offers to anyone from the waitlist so far this month.

There will be a lot of movement on our waitlist over these next three weeks. At this time, we anticipate making approximately 15 offers of admission between now and the end of May. This number could increase slightly after May 23, which is the response date for those admitted in Round 3. We expect the majority of our decisions to be made by May 27.

Heading into June, the waitlist will be sized down to approximately 10 people; the waitlist at that time will serve to hold a group of candidates who could be available to matriculate in case last minute (early July) cancellations occur. If we would like to include you in this group, I will contact you.

It is critical to keep your contact information updated through the ApplyYourself system, especially since many of you are traveling now and over the next few weeks.

Thank you for your patience with our process, and please contact my colleague, Dana Scalisi, if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Eileen Chang

Harvard Business School Waitlist letter — no news but they will take someone

MBA Program

May 2, 2011

Hello Everyone:

As it is the beginning of May, I wanted to let you know where we
stand on the Class of 2013.

This Thursday, May 5 is an important day for two reasons. First, Round 3 decisions
will be released. Second, it is the date when all those admitted in Round 2 are
required to let us know whether or not they will be matriculating at HBS.
Because the Round 2 response results are critical in dictating how many spots
will remain to be filled in the class, we will be waiting until after
May 5 before we begin making decisions on waitlist candidates.

We expect that there will be spaces in the class that will need to be filled,
but at this time I cannot accurately indicate to you how many. Next week
we will begin reviewing and making decisions on waitlist candidates in
earnest. Please email me directly at echang@hbs.edu if you still remain
interested in HBS and are sincere in your intent to accept a place in the
class should one be offered to you. The majority of you should hear a decision
on your application before the end of May.

Heading into June, the waitlist will be significantly smaller.
The waitlist at that time will serve to hold a group of candidates
who could be available to matriculate in case last minute (early July)
cancellations occur. It is critical to keep your contact information updated by emailing
my colleague, Dana Scalisi, especially since many of you are traveling now and over the
next few weeks.

Thank you for your patience with our process, and please contact me if you have any questions.

Yes, Virginia, you can lobby your way off HBS, Stanford, and Wharton Waitlist–sometimes

Friday, April 8th, 2011
Hey Sandy, what’s your take on sending out letters of support/recommendation after being waitlisted? I know ad com states that they don’t want to be contacted. However, what’s the best way to continue to show interest? Thanks

From calling the main number and this article, I think it’s a no-no: http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/03/ … -is-a-test

I dont want to get into a pee-wee contest w. other consultants in the blog section of this Forum or article cited above, but if you really want to destroy some myths about B Schools and Wait Lists, here goes.

1. There are no rules: DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY TELL YOU, OR WHAT ADCOM HEADS SAY WHEN GIVING INTERVIEWS, WHAT THE HELL DO YOU EXPECT THEM TO SAY, DISREGARD OUR INSTRUCTIONS. ditto kids like the bold lad above, who, gasp!, called the MAIN number: “Hello, this is Joe Blow the WL kid, and unlike the shy sucker other kids on the WL, I am so bold as to call you, and, of course, since you dont know me from Adam, you will give me the inside scoop about the WL. Here’s my question, honey (I like to charm them on the phone), the letter I got said not to contact you, but, you know, sweetie, just between cutie-pie you and me and fence post, I mean is that for all the fellas out there who are not as charming as lil’ ol me, or is there some secret way to get off the WL for smooth-as-silk types like me, who also has the Spauldings to like call you’ll???? What’s that, honeybun? There ain’t no way???? Now that is not just the guff you tell all the boys, is it sweetie??? IT AINT, well, dang me, ok darlin’ one mo’ time, and now I am putting a cherry on top of what I am saying, Aint there some sugar WL for rascals like me? You know the one you dont show all the boys, just those with a big grin and shiny blue eyes like me. There is not!!!! Now, cupcake, you are breaking my heart . . . .but I know what you are doing, three is the charm, right, so I gotta make a cute little puppy dog and beg three times, aint that right Flower-belle? . . . . .etc ”
2. As to H/S/W ALL OF WHICH HAVE NOMINAL DO-NOT-CONTACT US RULES,  there is not much you can do for yourself, that much I agree with, but there are things OTHERS can do for you, [ including alums, current students, and esp. any bigshots or influentials you work for or who know your work, esp. if they also, ahem, hire jerks fr. those very same schools. HAVE THEM CALL THE ADCOM OR THE DEAN AND PUT SOME SKIN IN THE GAME FOR YOU.
3. duh, gee Sandy, how do you know this?
4. Because I have seen it work MANY MANY MANY times –that is how. Some percent of WL admits will have bigshots or other influentials call for them. And sometimes (not always) those kids get in.
NOW–do I know if those kids who had bigshots or other influenetials call for them would have gotten in anyway without the call? No, how could I? And since some kids had folks make calls for them and did not get off WL, doesnt that prove that calls dont mean much? NOT NECESSARILY. IT DEPENDS ON THE CALL. THE CALLER. WHAT WAS SAID, AND QUITE FRANKLY, A BIT OF LUCK. THERE IS SUCH A THING AS TELEPHONE KARMA. I have feedback fr. MANY MANY calls made to HSW deans and adcoms, and sometimes people strike it lucky, and sometimes not. And as much as I love Her Royal Highness, like many potentates, somedays she pouts and somedays she smiles. Royalty is like that.
5. Sandy, you are bugging me, this goes against all the flap-doodle on other sites, and what the schools say themselves? That is because, secretly, YOU DONT WANT TO DO ANYTHING and YOU WANT TO HEAR THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO!
6. Sandy, I dont know any bigshots or influentials. Well, don’t despair, most people get off WL by in fact doing nothing, so all is not lost. The number of kids who can lobby their way off WL is about ~10pct of WL admits each year. Soooooooooo, consider the WL about as ‘fair’ as most things in the admissions game, and more fair than life and death in 99 pct of the places on earth. But use your noodle. If you are adcom, and some head of PE shop, or fellow dean, or big charity dude, or demi-celebrity calls you and makes a strong case for X, who gives a frig, make the bigshot happy. People actually like to do favors for bigshots, it makes them feel more important.
Look at the ****bags at Monitor, they were falling over themselves to do a favor for a war crimminal, and it was NOT JUST THE MONEY!!!! (altho sure . . . .), it also made them feel good that they had reached a position where they could influence things. I mean NO ONE REALLY CARES who gets in off WL (except you of course), so WHY NOT DO A FAVOR, it dont cost you anything, anyone on the WL is by def. already OK, and you never know when you may need a little favor yourself, but mostly, it just feels good in some deep, selfish, primal way, that as adcom you can help out a bigshot or influential . . . you dont feel cheap or used or dirty, you feel pride, altho it is not the kind of pride you ever talk about or can share. It is deep inside your head, along w. other really secret, deep, personal, and often ‘unseemly’ stuff.
7. In my experience, most WL kids do TOO LITTLE and not too much. Can contacting adcom work against you, sure, anything can work against you, you need to play it right, like you need to play everything right in a game w.out rules by using smarts, savvy, and shrewd judgment. But make no doubt about it, this is a test that is more impt than ANY test you will take in B school. Again, if you absolutely dont know anyone, dont super fret, most folks get off WL at HSW by waiting, but if you do . . . .well,
OK end of today’s sermon.

MBA Program

March 31, 2011

Hello Everyone:

It’s Eileen Chang from the MBA Admissions Board at HBS.

I’d like to welcome those candidates receiving this correspondence for the first time. This is a regular update I send out at the beginning of each month to give all of you an update on our Admissions process. I realize we are a day shy of April 1, but given that a lot has happened this week, I felt it was important to reach out earlier.

For those of you from Round 2 who haven’t yet confirmed your place on our waitlist via the online poll, we appreciate your doing so as soon as possible.

Round 2 decision notifications were released on Tuesday. We also admitted approximately 50 Round 1 waitlist candidates on Tuesday. Now, with the addition of candidates from Round 2, our waitlist currently stands at around 100 candidates.

Our final Round 3 submission deadline is today and we will begin reviewing Round 3 applications tonight.

By the end of the day today, we will have received all applications that will be considered for the Class of 2013. In the immediate term, we will be focusing on our Round 3 applicants. I anticipate that at the end of April, we will begin actively reviewing our waitlist. If there will be decisions made before the end of April, I will be in touch to let you know what to expect.

Although we do not want to make guarantees as to the exact date when you will likely hear a decision from us on your application, we do want to emphasize that we will keep a waitlist as long as there is a reasonable expectation that space may be available in the class. In terms of setting expectations, the majority of decisions on waitlist candidates are made before June 1.

Finally, it is very important that you keep your contact information updated through the ApplyYourself system. If at any time you would like to withdraw from the waitlist, please email us and let us know.

We appreciate your cooperation. If you have any questions, please contact my colleague Dana Scalisi, who works with me in managing the waitlist.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Eileen Chang

February 1, 2011

Hello Everyone:

It’s Eileen Chang from HBS. Since it is the beginning of the month, we wanted to provide you with an update on where we are right now. I know many of you have been patiently waiting for news.

Right now we are deep in evaluating our Round 2 applicants. The first wave of interview invitations will begin going out this Friday, February 4 and will continue until February 16.

Some of you on the waitlist were not interviewed in Round 1. If you are in this group, we are currently evaluating your application along with the Round 2 applicants. You should expect one of two outcomes this month: you will either be invited to interview sometime between February 4 and February 16 along with those from Round 2, or your application will be released on February 16 in order to enable you to pursue other options.

For those of you who were already interviewed in Round 1, you should not expect any activity this month. We will revisit your application again in March as we make decisions on the Round 2 candidates. Many of you should expect a decision on your application on March 29, the decision notification date for Round 2. I will have more information for you in my update on March 1.

We do not plan to make decisions any earlier than what I have outlined above. We understand that some of you may require a different timeline; if so, and you would like to remove yourself from our waitlist, please let Dana Scalisi know at dana_scalisi@hbs.edu.

Thank you for your patience, and please contact us if this is not clear.

HBS to put 100 more on WL, give limited feedback

Monday, December 13th, 2010

HBS UPDATE –NEW FROM HER MAJESTY

1. This is bad news for current WLers, w. 100 MORE kids being added to the WL in additon to the alleged 100 non-interviewed kids  they put on there in November first cut mailing.

2. Dee is giving feedback of sorts, NO CRANK CALLS PLEASE, and this is somewhat odd, since she wont have your file, altho she can get a profile of you on her i-Pad, I’ve been told (which curiously lacks a gmat score but does include gpa, college, and some other key stats, like shoe size).

3. As if she had read our last post about the new PC diversity sweeping the school, she notes here, “Our promise to students each year is to comprise a diverse and balanced class – and our metrics for diversity are more complex than those which can be easily reported in a class profile on the website.” Duh, someone tell me what that means, do they also filter for eye color, lefthandness and sense of humor.

4. What is up w. Eileen Chang’s new title, Director of MBA Admissions Operations, and is that a step up, down, sideways, or just a spin around the block. She used to be WL Manager. Usually Director is promo, and we hope so, SK ♥ EC,

MBA Program

December 13, 2010

Greetings,

Tomorrow, December 14, we will release decisions.most likely around noon EST. You will receive an email from MBA Admissions directing you to log in to your online application to view your decision.

About 100 people will be invited to join the waitlist after having been interviewed. Eileen Chang, Director of MBA Admissions Operations, and Dana Scalisi, Waitlist Manager, manage this process and will be in touch with this group before the end of the week.

A note in advance about how we make decisions. Everyone invited to interview is a highly qualified candidate for Harvard Business School. As I tried to make clear in all the interviews I personally conducted, once the hurdle of being invited to interview is cleared, the candidate moves from the realm of being “evaluated” to the world of “selection,” which is more complicated. Our promise to students each year is to comprise a diverse and balanced class – and our metrics for diversity are more complex than those which can be easily reported in a class profile on the website. If my job were to rank order candidates from high to low in order of individual strength, whatever that might mean, different decisions might be made.

Some of you will be disappointed tomorrow and wish to know “what went wrong.” In most cases, the answer is “nothing, it’s about composing a class.” If we had the resources to do individual feedback calls, this is the message that you would most likely hear. We would be reckless if we tried to communicate otherwise. Nonetheless, if a conversation in general terms about our process would be helpful, I’ll be available from 8 am – 9 am every day during the week of January 3 at 617-495-6128. I won’t have your file in front of me, but I’ll try my best to answer general questions.

I thank all of you who engaged in the application process, especially the interview. We sincerely enjoyed meeting you and appreciate the considerable time and effort you invested. Our admissions process is not perfect – our ability to get to know the “real you” is limited – but we do work very hard to make sure it is thoughtful and fair.

With all best wishes,

HBS WAITLIST LETTER, NOV 2010 -to be read w. Dee’s post yesterday that she is placing about 100 peeps on the WL, altho I think number is higher.

November 3, 2010

Dear Sucker:

The MBA Admissions Board has reviewed your application materials and we will be deferring your application for further consideration in round 2. Until then, you will be placed on our waitlist.

This waitlist decision is an indication that we remain interested in your candidacy, but would like to continue to review your application. After the round 2 submission deadline of January 11, 2011, we will have received the majority of applications that will be considered for the class of 2013 and will be able to make a final decision on your application.

Please indicate whether you would like to accept a place on our waitlist through the online waitlist poll. A final decision will be communicated to you on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, which is the decision notification date for round 2.

You are being placed on the waitlist without an interview. If during further review of your application in round 2 we decide to extend an invitation to interview, that invitation will be sent when round 2 interview invitations go out in February. Interviews are by invitation only—please do not contact our office with a request for an interview.

Tomorrow our waitlist manager, Eileen Chang, will be in touch to provide additional clarity on our waitlist process.

We will continue to give your application full and thoughtful consideration as our admissions season continues. We appreciate your interest in Harvard Business School and are grateful for your patience.

Sincerely,

Deirdre C. Leopold

Dear Mr. or Mrs Waitlist:

Later on today you will be receiving official notification of your release from our waitlist. While this outcome is likely not what you had been hoping for, we want to thank you for being on our waitlist this year, and for the patience you have shown during your time with us.

We know that being on the waitlist is certainly difficult. The anxiety you experienced with the uncertainty in timing is something that we fully acknowledge. We communicated these same words when we released our waitlist last year, and we stand by them as they are sincere in their sentiment. We hope our monthly updates and desire to be transparent in our process was somewhat helpful in mitigating this anxiety. Regardless, while this is probably not much comfort right now, please know that every candidate on our waitlist was important to us, and your cooperation with our process was truly appreciated.

It has been a pleasure getting to know you, Waitlister, and we wish you the best in the coming year. Thank you for your interest in our MBA program.

Sincerely,
