HBS:12 more invites, WL plans, 70 kids taken off WL last year.

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Below is a Dee-Dee gram fr. her blog, good for her in sending out some real info, unlike some other leading business school which prides itself on transparency, well, for others.  The 70 kids off WL last year, seems high to me, given numbers that were dribbling out, but there could have been a surge. Anyway, good benchmark to keep in mind.

Round 1 Update

Now that it’s December, we’re in countdown mode to the December 15 notification date, so here’s what’s happening:

I think there may be about a dozen more interview invitations going out before the 15th…this is just a matter of reviewing how the class is shaping up at this point and going back and re-reviewing before final decisions are made.

As I’ve said before, we are building a waitlist of round 1 candidates – both those who have been interviewed and those who haven’t. A “waitlist” letter in round 1 is essentially a “further consideration” decision – we will try to resolve many of these cases after we review round 2 applications. Last year we ended up admitting 70 people from the waitlist.

The next update – probably early next week – will be about how decisions are released on December 15.

Does being an undergrad there help you as applicant to H/S/W?

Would a former undergrad at H/S/W be more likely to get into the respective business program? Or does this have no affect?

HMMMM, ODD PARADOX HERE. WHILE THE LARGEST NUMBER OF COLLEGE KIDS AT H/S/W IN FACT COME FR. H/S/W RESPECTIVELY, E.G. MORE HARVARD COLLEGE KIDS ATTEND HBS THAN ANY OTHER COLLEGE (IN GROSS NUMBERS), MORE PENN KIDS ATTEND WHARTON–BEING AN ALUM CAN BE TRICKY. I DONT THINK IT GIVES YOU AN ADVANT., AND IN SOME CASES, CAN BE A DISADVAN. SCHOOLS LIKE TO THINK OF THEMSELVES AS TRANSFORMING, AND THERE IS SOME SENSE OF –HEY YOU ALREADY BEEN HERE–BUT THAT IS PASSING. THE FACT IS, BETWEEN H AND S, A LOT OF ALUM ATTENDANCE IS BASED ON GEOGRAPHY, LOTSA STAN COLLEGE KIDS SETTLE IN CALI ETC. AND WANT TO STAY THERE, ETC. AND W. WHARTON, IT IS A MATTER OF OUTLOOK, E.G. THEY LIKE QUANT BASED CURRICULUM. ANYWAY, I DONT THINK YOU GET A BREAK AND IN A CLOSE CASE, CLD LOSE OUT TO SOME OTHER KID, WHOM ADCOM MAY THINK HAS NOT HAD ALL THE ADVANTAGES THE ALUM HAS.
