Rise of Chinese and Indian B schools杗ot so fast imho

Friday, May 8th, 2009

BW article on rising Indian and Chinese Business Schools –with tub-thumping conclusions about why these schools will rival US schools.聽 SK says, academic reputations change VERY VERY SLOWLY despite how fast anything else may change
The Odds Favor Business Schools in China and India

  • –First, student quality at the top Indian and Chinese business schools is superb and getting better.
  • –Second, domestic salaries received by graduates of the top MBA programs in both China and India are rising and becoming competitive with their counterparts in the West.
  • –Third, it is now virtually impossible for any school to maintain a competitive advantage based on the curriculum.
  • Fourth, context matters. Unlike in the U.S., state- and family-owned enterprises constitute the large majority of corporations in both China and India.

Leading indigenous MBA programs are able to provide much greater exposure to these contextual realities than Harvard or Stanford ever could. One U.S.-trained partner at the Mumbai offices of one of the world’s leading strategy consulting firms told us: “We have direct experience with MBAs from the top Indian schools as well as returnees with degrees from the top Western schools. American MBAs are better packaged. However, the Indian MBAs are much stronger analytically and have more in-depth understanding of the Indian business environment. On average, the latter tend to be more successful for us. The importance of context also shows up in that our Europe-educated MBAs tend to perform better in India than those from the U.S.”

Stanford May 7th WL update, some tuff love for WLer’s, who must decide when outreach to adcom turns into bugging adcom: we like this admonition,聽Please remember that whether you choose to submit additional materials and what you submit it is a reflection of your judgment.聽”

Dear WLer

Greetings from the Stanford GSB. 聽We greatly appreciate your patience and would like to give you an update on the waitlist process.

We realize that being on the waitlist can be both frustrating and potentially exciting. 聽Here are some things to consider during this process:

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Please remember that additional submission of materials is neither requested nor suggested.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 If you wish to update us on any recent and substantive changes, you may send them to mba_admin@gsb.stanford.edu

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 If someone offers to write a letter on your behalf with new information, have them send it to mba_admin@gsb.stanford.edu

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Please remember that whether you choose to submit additional materials and what you submit it is a reflection of your judgment.聽 We ask that you use good judgment and only update us on new and substantive changes.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Visiting campus has no effect on your candidacy. Furthermore, we are unable to accommodate requests to meet with admissions officers as we are in the midst of reviewing Round 3 applications.

Please know we are committed to your candidacy, and you are on the waitlist because you are a competitive candidate. We fully acknowledge that being on the waitlist is difficult and we appreciate your patience. We will update the decision on all waitlisted candidates on 22 May 2009.

Take care,

Harvard Business School Admits First 2+2 Program Participants (official press release)

BOSTON, Sept. 17, 2008 – Harvard Business School (HBS) has accepted the first undergraduates who will take part in HBS 2+2, the School’s groundbreaking deferred MBA admission program.
A total of 106 seniors from 52 colleges have been admitted to the HBS 2+2 program, which was designed to reach a diverse group of high-achieving college students, studying in the fields of science, engineering, healthcare, government, and public service, among other disciplines, as they begin to explore career and graduate school opportunities. After two years of work experience, they will begin the Harvard MBA program in 2011 as members of the Class of 2013.
“We are delighted with this inaugural group of 2+2 students,” said Deirdre Leopold, Managing Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. “The Harvard MBA degree offers a wide range of options after graduation – from startups to giant corporations, businesses to social enterprises, hospitals to the halls of government. HBS 2+2 enables undergraduates to understand that flexibility early in their education. It also contradicts the conventional – and incorrect – notion that prospective students must have worked for five or six years before applying to the School. As far as we’re concerned, there is no single profile for the successful applicant to HBS.”
Class of 2013 2+2 Admitted Student Profile
Total Applicants 630
Admits 106
% admitted 17%
Undergraduate Institutions Represented 52
Female 41%
International 25%
Countries Represented 15
Average GMAT 718
Average GPA* 3.73
* Excludes GPAs not on 4.0 scales.
Educational Background
Humanities and Social Sciences 49%
Engineering and Natural Sciences 48%
Business Administration 3%
The 2+2 program gives undergraduates a guaranteed place in a future Harvard Business School MBA class, contingent upon their graduation from college and the successful completion of two years of approved work experience. As many as 76 organizations, including Google, Teach for America, The Clorox Company, and McKinsey & Company, serve as recruiting partners to facilitate the job search process; and HBS 2+2 admitted students receive assistance from HBS in finding a job for the two years between their college graduation and full-time matriculation at HBS.
During their two year-work experience, students also participate in on-campus summer academic programs that allow them to experience HBS classes taught by HBS faculty as well as meet their fellow classmates. In addition, HBS 2+2 admits have a dedicated career coach and access to strategic career coaching advice through the self-assessment on-line tool CareerLeader-College? (developed by faculty at HBS).
Additional information is available at www.hbs.edu/2+2.

HBS May 1st WL letter杗o news, but it requires close reading

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Do not misread her remarks that she expects a lot of movement on WL near May 13th to mean there will be a lot of admits:聽聽what she means is that they will start releasing a lot of people, and accepting ” a number of admit offers “ which is undefined, but if last year’s numbers are any guide, and this year seems to be following last year, will be sorta ~10-20 or so, and 20 could be on the high side. With 聽over 200 kids on WL, that still makes for uphill odds. We are glad she is now including the date on these letters. !!!!

MBA Program

May 1, 2009

Hello Everyone:

It’s Eileen Chang from the MBA Admissions Board at HBS with a monthly update on our Admissions process.

We know that many of you are anxious for resolution on your application, and we are going to do our best to make as many decisions as we can this month. We are currently interviewing round 3 candidates, and in the next week will have a much better sense as to how many spots we will have available for waitlist candidates. We expect there to be a lot of movement on the waitlist in May, starting with the round 3 notification date of May 13. We plan to make a number of admit offers to those on the waitlist – again, the exact number is still unclear to us at this time – but we will also begin releasing candidates, too. The majority of you should expect to hear a decision on your application anytime between May 13 and May 31. In anticipation of these decisions, please respond to this poll and indicate whether you would like to remain in consideration for a spot in the Class of 2011, or if you have made other plans and would like to be removed from the waitlist.Heading into June, the waitlist will be significantly smaller. The waitlist at that time will serve to hold a group of candidates who could be available to matriculate in case last minute (early July) cancellations occur. It is critical to keep your contact information updated through the Apply Yourself system, especially since many of you are traveling now and over the next few weeks. We have tried our best to be as transparent as possible during this process, and really appreciate the cooperation you have all shown us. Thank you for your continued patience and as always, please contact my colleague Dana Scalisi if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Eileen Chang
